A month or so ago one of our pastors mentioned that he had picked out a life verse for his son, a verse he picked out just for him and prayed for him. Jeremy remembered this and had the great idea that we should do that as well. After some searching and deliberation, we decided on these for the girls:
Emily's is Philippians 4:13: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
Bri's is Deuteronomy 6:5: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength."
These are obviously both great verses (and fairly common ones, too) but the neatest thing and one of the reasons we picked them is that the references reflect their birthdays. Emily's birthday is April 13 (4/13) and Bri's is June 5 (6/5). I thought of Emily's first since Philippians 4:13 came to mind, and I stumbled upon Deuteronomy 6:5 by "accident" -- I googled "life verse" and a random blog came up, and the first verse that popped up was Deut. 6:5. When I saw it I knew it was from God. I emailed it to Jer; all he typed back was, "I love it."
We want the girls to memorize their life verses, and we're also planning to have them on the wall in their room. Emily has hers down and Bri is close. The other fortunate thing is that both of these verses happen to be on an old Steve Green kids tape (yes, we still have a few cassettes around) called "Hide 'Em in your Heart." If you want a great way to get your kids to memorize Scripture via song, check out this CD. We've found that Emily has a real love for music, and the best way for her to memorize verses is to put them to a tune. We did this with AWANA verses last year, too.
Let me know if you decide on life verses for your kids as well! You might not find any with special numbers, but try to pick one that fits their personality and is something they can memorize and understand.
P.S. I just finished framing the girls' verses (on 11/18/10). Here's a picture of Bri's:
This is so great. My life verse or should say Psalm is Psalm 27. The Lord gave it to me when I was about 16. It seems that no matter what happens in my life it applies. Love you all dearly!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea, I'm going to find verses for Rainey and Jacob. Andy by the way, I LOVE your new blog!!
ReplyDeleteLove the idea of printing them out and framing them. We have chosen verses for the boys but having a visual is a great idea! Might just have to copy this one :)
